The Capital of Dreams: A Novel

A collection of manifestos originally published in 1938, The Theater and Its Double is the fullest statement of the ideas of Antonin Artaud. “We cannot go on prostituting the idea of the theater, the only value of which is in its excruciating, magical relation to reality and danger,” he wrote. He fought vigorously against an encroaching conventionalism he found anathema to the very concept of theater. He sought to use theater to transcend writing, “to break through the language in order to touch life.”

This volume offers a major selection of Bertolt Brecht's groundbreaking critical writing. My love for books runs deep. Bookstores were my favorite place to visit as a child, I received a double major in English Literature and Drama from the University of Virginia, and I went on to author *The Women's Health Big Book of Yoga* and *Aim True*. My most recent work was published in Zosia Mamet’s anthology, *My First Popsicle*, but my true loves have yet to meet the world — I too write fiction, and long to see it in published form. I co-host Free Cookies with my wife (and author!), Kate Fagan, where we banter and interview notables such as Madeline Miller, TJ Klune, George M. Johnson, and Emily St. John Mandel. Plus, we have the cutest rescue pup in the world: Ragnar Ashison.
